Self-Care During Uncertain Times

by Mimi Topping, CZT

For many, the times we’re living through right now have brought about rapid changes in our personal lives as well as our personal perspectives. Many of these changes are positive ones with long lasting impact on ourselves and on our world.  Some changes, however, have had a negative impact on us through many types of personal loss, and feelings of uncertainty.  Changes of any kind can be stressful, especially at the speed in which we have been experiencing them and the immediate need to adjust to these changes.  There has been much emphasis, and many great examples lately, of people reaching out and caring for others during this historically difficult time. The outreach is uplifting and inspiring, but it is also essential that we put focus on our own self-care.

If you’ve ever flown on an airplane, you may have heard the lesson about not being able to help your neighbor until you put your own oxygen mask on first. This rings true on so many levels, and is why today’s blog post is about self-care. When we are functioning at our best and feel balanced within, we are better able to help and be most impactful on those around us: whether it be in our own immediate circles, or the greater circle 🌎.

So, take time to nurture in yourself the things you love to do, the things that make you feel whole: Be it reading, writing, art, photography or another creative endeavor. Explore positive outlets that you may have never tried before.  My recommendation is to look into Zentangle®, it’s a global phenomenon that has positively impacted so many people all over the world, and in every walk of life! The Zentangle method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.  It was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas in 2003.

In my next post, I will be introducing you to a simple but fun way to create a Zentangle inspired bookmark. This little bookmark can literally mark your first step into a positive new you!
